I am pretty familiar with the oldest house in the village. It's a beautiful 1840s farmhouse with geometrical detailing on the trim and a sprawling porch. The house in the photograph above is not that house. This "oldest house" in the village (as it is labeled) was standing in 1927 but is gone today. The photograph was taken by Herbert B. Nichols, assistant librarian at the Westchester County Historical Society, and includes a note on the back posing the question: "Time of Revolution?"
The photo below shows the "oldest house" (marked with an X) in its location on Captain Merritt's Hill. It looks like it might have been a saltbox. When it gets a little bit warmer, I will have to go scout out the location. I have seen old foundation walls in this area before.
