Mount Desert Street Cemetery, Bar Harbor, Maine: Part 2

Check out the incredible engraving of a ship tossing on the sea, set within a cameo, on the monument to the left. Isn't it wonderful? I didn't take note of the owner, but I assume that he was a seaman of some kind. He wouldn't be the only one buried there.

On to more stones from the Mount Desert Street Cemetery ...

Just like the Episcopal Cemetery has its Sarleses, the Mount Desert Street Cemetery has its Higginses.
Grave of Edward L. (1833-1915) and Zena Higgins (1823-1896) Brewer
Graves of Hannah (d. 1901 ae. 83 yrs) and Daniel (d. 1889 ae. 73 yrs) Higgins
Graves of Royal G. (1809-1873), Mary F. (1839-1915), Ella F. (1866-1902), and Stephen W. (1869-1887) Higgins
Grave of Addie Florence Higgins (d. 1871 ae. 6 mos.)
Captain Isreal [sic] Higgins was lost at sea, and his tombstone, bearing a winged hourglass surrounded by a wreath, was erected by another Captain Higgins and S. Higgins. It also commemorates his wife Polly.

Grave of Captain Israel (d. 1823) and Polly (d. 1818) Higgins
There are two women buried in the cemetery who are named Aquaie or Aquea, a name that was perhaps attributable to the proximity of the ocean.

Grave of Aquaie J. (1866-1886) and Ophelia W. (1859-1886) Alley
Grave of Aquea S. Roberts (d. 1851 ae. 19 yrs)
This poor stone was reset in a completely new marker, only to break again and become swallowed up by the earth.
"Mamie and Andy"
The Bible motif depicted in this stone can be found in several stones in the Episcopal Cemetery.

Grave of Joseph Conners (d. 1882 ae. 79 yrs)
Here is another willow tree, just like the grave of John W. Day, except that this one commemorates the children of Henry and Huldah Higgins.

Grave of Deborah (d. 1813 ae. 19 yrs) and Amos (d. 1825 ae. 11 mos.) Higgins
Ezra H. Young, who shares his grave marker with his brother Oliver, was a Civil War soldier.

Grave of Oliver H. (d. 1867) and Ezra H. (d. 1863) Young
This engraving of a hand holding a bouquet, shown here on the grave of Zella B. Cook, is also found on several other stones in the cemetery. Does it represent mourning? Or perhaps, given Zella's age, the tragedy of a rose cut when it was still in bloom?

Grave of Zella B. Cook (d. 1885 ae. 20 yrs)
The grave below is simple and plain. It cuts straight to the heart.

Finally, one last picture of the cemetery with the Episcopal Church in the background.
