Graves of Deborah and Jacob Purdy |
Update #1 (scroll to bottom for Update #2). I found this tiny snippet about Philander Purdy in an article from the
North Westchester Times, August 11, 1911: "New Castle Corners History of Interest: Reminiscent Paragraphs by A. J. Q. tell about the Early History, Settlers and Business Places": "Now I mention
Philander Purdy, who kept the wheelwright shop. He made wagons and ox carts, used locust hubs and hickory spokes. Some of his wagons are still in use today, with wooden axle-tree and iron linch pin."
Philander G. Purdy was the son of Jacob and Deborah Purdy. Sarah Carpenter was the daughter of Willet Carpenter and Mary Ann Miller. Philander and Sarah were married in the early 1840s and had three children.
Philander's mother Deborah died in 1848 at the age of 57. In 1850, Philander was living with his father Jacob, a wheelwright; his wife Sarah; their sons John Leander and Charles H; and a 19-year-old woman named Mary A. Tripp.

Ten years later, Philander was now listed as a wheelwright and as the head of household. His oldest son John Leander was a clerk, and his father Jacob, age 77, was still living with them.

Jacob Purdy died in 1865. In 1870, Philander and Sarah were living with their two younger children.

In 1880, Philander was living with Thomas Wright and
Mary Carpenter, the widow of Gilbert Carpenter.

Philander died in 1887. This was his obituary:

Benjamin and Susan's son LeRoy became a carpenter and married Mildred Whitlock. They had one son, Clifford, born in 1917.
Update #2: Philander and Sarah's son Charles H. Purdy was buried in the cemetery as well, but I didn't know it until now because he died in 1922, after the 1909 transcription.
